Claus,Marlise Pompeo; Lunardi,Michele; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo; Otonel,Rodrigo Alejandro Arellano; Ferracin,Lara Munique; Fungaro,Maria Helena Pelegrinelli; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes.
The common occurrence of multiple papillomavirus infections has been shown in several studies involving the human host. However, investigations with the aim of identifying mixed papillomavirus infections in cattle have been conducted only recently. In the current work we describe a co-infection with two different bovine papillomavirus (BPV) types that was identified in a bovine teat papilloma. The skin wart was obtained from a cow belonging to a Brazilian beef herd. A PCR assay was carried out with the FAP primer pair, which amplifies a partial segment of the L1 gene (approximately 478 bp), and the amplicon was submitted to direct sequencing. Because nucleotide sequences with satisfactory quality scores were not obtained, the amplicon was cloned and...

A syphilis co-infection study in human papilloma virus patients attended in the sexually transmitted infection ambulatory clinic, Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJID
Souza,Lúcia Maria de Sena; Miller,William Meihack; Nery,José Augusto da Costa; Andrade,Arnaldo Feitosa Braga de; Asensi,Marise Dutra.
Despite the prevalence of syphilis worldwide, little is known about its manifestations when associated with other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), specifically the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Current epidemiological studies show that there is a high incidence of both diseases in ambulatory clinics all over Brazil. This study aims to estimate the incidence of syphilis - HPV co-infections, among patients from the STI ambulatory clinic at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Hospital, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Two-hundred and seven patients were seen in the clinic between March and December 2005, of which 113 (54.6%) sought care for an HPV infection. Blood samples were taken from all patients to check syphilis serology using the flocculation and the...

Bovine coronavirus detection in a collection of diarrheic stool samples positive for group a bovine rotavirus BABT
Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Stipp,Danilo Tancler; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Neonatal diarrhea is an important cause of economic losses for cattle farmers. The main viral etiologies of enteric diseases are group A rotaviruses (GARV) and the bovine coronavirus (BCoV). Although both viruses infect calves of the same age, the occurrence of mixed infections is still under studied. The present study describes the co-infection of BCoV and GARV in stool samples. Forty-four diarrheic fecal samples from calves up to 60 days old that had previously tested positive for GARV by SS-PAGE were analyzed using semi-nested PCR for BCoV. A product with 251 bp of the BCoV nucleoprotein gene was amplified in 15.9% (7/44) of the samples, demonstrating that co-infection is not an unusual event. These results reinforce the need for testing for both GARV...

Co-infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is increasingly common and affects the clinical course of chronic hepatitis C. Highly active antiretroviral therapy has improved the life expectancy of HIV infected patients, but, by extending survival, it permits the development of HCV cirrhosis. This study tried to evaluate clinical and epidemiological features of patients with chronic hepatitis C co-infected with HIV. We evaluated 134 HCV-infected patients: i) group A - 65 co-infected HCV/HIV patients, ii) group B - 69 mono-infected HCV patients. The impact of HIV infection on HCV liver disease was analyzed using Child's score, ultrasound findings and liver histology. Patients were subjected to HCV genotyping and anti-HBs...

Co-infections with bovine herpesvirus type 5 and bovine viral diarrhoea virus Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Spilki,F.R.; Silva,T.C.; Esteves,P.A.; Teixeira,M.B.; Batista,H.B.C.R.; Chiminazzo,C.; Driemeier,D.; Franco,A.C.; Roehe,P.M..
During a series of experiments attempting to reproduce clinically apparent bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BoHV-5) infections, a group of calves was inadvertently infected with bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV). Another group of calves was infected with BoHV-5 only. This paper reports the outcome of such infections. Two out of six calves solely infected with BoHV-5 displayed moderate to severe clinical signs. Three out of four calves of the group co-infected with BoHV-5 and BVDV developed severe clinical signs, two of them died. BoHV-5 virus was isolated to higher titres and for a longer period from the group of calves infected with both viruses. These results suggest that BVDV may enhance clinical signs induced by BoHV-5 and may also play a role in extending...

Abstract JC virus (JCV) is a member of the Polyomaviridae family and is associated to a severe disease known as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, PML, which is gradually increasing in incidence as an opportunistic infection among AIDS patients. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of JCV among HIV-1 carriers including their types and molecular subtypes and the possible association with disease. Urine samples from 66 HIV-1 infected subjects were investigated for the presence of the virus by amplifying VP1 (215 bp) and IG (610 bp) regions using the polymerase chain reaction. JCV was detected in 32% of the samples. The results confirmed the occurrence of type B (subtype Af2); in addition, another polyomavirus, BKV, was also detected...

Prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus/hepatitis C virus co-infection in Brazil and associated factors: a review BJID
Kuehlkamp,Valdete Meurer; Schuelter-Trevisol,Fabiana.
The hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus share the same transmission routes, which makes co-infection an unfavorable condition for the natural history of both viral diseases. In this context, it should be highlighted that the knowledge of the extent of co-infection and associated risk factors is a vital tool for prevention and control over infectious diseases. The aim of this study was to review the literature, seeking to examine the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus/hepatitis C virus co-infection reported in studies conducted in Brazil, and identify the main risk factors associated with co-infection. The electronic search was conducted in the Medline, Lilacs and SciELO databases. The following keywords were used: human...

Simultaneous viral infection and childhood bronchiolitis obliterans BJID
Hirschheimer,Mário; Silva,Paulo S. L.; Giudici,Roseli; Carrilho,Milene; Mauad,Thais; Ishida,Maria.
Lower respiratory tract infections by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are frequent in childhood. Association of RSV with bronchiolitis obliterans has rarely been established. We report a 13-month-old child with bronchiolitis obliterans following co-infection by RSV and adenovirus, and suggest that complicated evolution of an acute bronchiolitis case can indicate an association of pathogens.
